When the team sheets filtered through prior to kick-off and a certain No. 7 was only included among the substitutes I had hoped that I may be able to get away without mentioning Mr. Ronaldo. No such luck.
An insipid contest between a side already guaranteed top spot in Group A and one already resigned to watching the rest of the tournament from the comfort of their sofa was crying out for the individual brilliance of this summer's main attraction.
Luiz Felipe Scolari is no mug and, in the same situation, I would not have risked the wing wizard, but the game was all the worse for his absence.
Ronaldo's understudy at Manchester United, Nani, along with Porto's enigmatic playmaker Ricardo Quaresma were supposed to take the show pony mantle but failed to stake a purposeful claim to their illustrious team-mates' crown.
Nani has unquestionable talent but his penchant for the theatrical can leave you wondering what he could achieve if he stayed on his feet. The youngster also missed his country's best chance of the game.
Whether he is included in a potential last eight contest with Germany remains to be seen, while there will also be question marks over the continued inclusion of Quaresma. A man capable of the sublime and the ridiculous in equal measure lacks the all-conquering presence of Ronaldo and the calming influence of Deco, and should expect to retreat back into the shadows after fluffing his lines during a rare international audition.
He is not alone in his flattery to deceive, and another who must be pushing Scolari's patience, is Paulo Ferreira.Quite why the Chelsea man has been continually deployed at left-back throughout Euro 2008 remains a mystery especially as he has looked increasingly out of his depth. He lasted 41 minutes this time around, but still had enough time to earn a needless caution and be tied up in knots by the impressive Lazio winger Valon Behrami. His place at Stamford Bridge must be under serious threat, although his potential nemesis in West London, Jose Bosingwa, remained benched throughout the Swiss contest.
With no other Portuguese players currently plying their trade on these shores it was left to the Premier League 'stars' of past, and perhaps future, to display their worth. Former Tottenham misfit Helder Postiga appears to have progressed little since his forgettable spell at White Hart Lane, while Manchester United target Miguel Veloso hinted that he has the capabilities to be a success in English football.
For Switzerland, who appeared to thrive in an environment devoid of expectation, Hakan Yakin's double, including an unstoppable spot-kick, proved to be the difference between the two sides.
Jakob Kuhn's men were good value for their victory, with commanding performances all over the park. Patrick Muller, Ludovic Magnin, Gokhan Inler and Behrami deserve special praise for their composed displays, while the English-based duo let no-one down.
Manchester City's Gelson Fernandes has looked assured throughout his first taste of major international competition and has the potential to become a fine all round midfielder. His reading of the game allows him to break up opposition possession with alarming regularity, while a cool head on his young shoulders ensures that he is never flustered or found wanting when the boots are flying in the middle of the park.
While much was expected of Gelson heading into the European Championship, and his displays have only served to confirm what many already knew, British supporters must have wondered which side of Philippe Senderos' Jekyll and Hyde personality would be on show in his own backyard this summer.
To be fair to the much-maligned Arsenal centre-half he looks far more composed in the red of his country than he does in that of the Gunners and he was rarely troubled by a toothless Portuguese front line. His distribution is at times questionable to say the least, but he will always guarantee 100 per cent effort. He should return to the Emirates Stadium next season in buoyant mood, while the same cannot be said of his club team-mate Johan Djourou. The versatile defender was restricted to a spectator role throughout the tournament, doing little to help him catch the eye of domestic employers already reluctant to hand him regular first-team football. Djourou will have hoped for more of an involvement, while Liverpool supporters are no wiser as to what Philipp Degen will bring to Anfield next season as the full-back is another who must be wondering why he bothered turning up.
A 2-0 scoreline ensures that Switzerland bow out with their heads held high, while Portugal can comfort themselves with the knowledge that they have a £75million talent ready to waltz back into last eight action.

THE man with Cristiano Ronaldo in dramatic pictures printed by The Sun compiled a detailed dossier on the Manchester United star which he handed to Real Madrid. These are the photos that Madrid yesterday claimed could not possibly exist. They show Ronaldo secretly meeting Real’s fitness coach Walter Di Salvo in Rome.
Di Salvo worked with Ronaldo for three seasons at Old Trafford, where they formed a strong bond. Sources close to Ronaldo insisted at the time it was a chance meeting as the Portugal winger took a two-day break in the Italian capital.
Yet the full picture only now begins to emerge because we can reveal Di Salvo, who controversially left United last summer to join Madrid, gave the Spanish giants a FULL report on Ronaldo.
In it were all his observations of the United superstar during their time together at Old Trafford — precious information about his lifestyle, fitness, diet and personality. Madrid technical director Miguel Angel Portugal, sporting director Pedja Mijatovic and board member Carlos Bucero asked Di Salvo to compile his detailed assessment on EVERY aspect of Ronaldo.
Di Salvo said Ronaldo is the “perfect professional” — a brilliant trainer who watches his diet and dedicates himself to his football. It was also said that Ronaldo is the centre of attention in the dressing room but behaves with humility and great respect towards his team-mates. In other words, he is no big-time Charlie and will not unsettle a dressing room with airs and graces.
Di Salvo left Old Trafford for Madrid in bitter circumstances. He was once described by Alex Ferguson as the “secret weapon” behind United’s successful title campaign in 2006-07. United’s assistant manager Carlos Queiroz felt betrayed when his close pal walked out and headed to Madrid. Queiroz even launched a furious attack on the fitness coach and has not spoken to him since.
The former Real Madrid coach has even more reason to be angry now because Ronaldo and Di Salvo stayed close friends. There can be little doubt Ronaldo regards Di Salvo as a personal friend and confidante rather than as a representative of Real. And there is little doubt the Italian told Ronaldo that the Bernabeu is the perfect place for the world’s best player to strut his stuff.
Ronaldo, 23, confided in friends that he views Di Salvo like an older brother and often chats to him about his fitness. They also discuss how the player can stay sharp for both United and Portugal at crucial stages of the season. Ronaldo even uses the Italian as a sounding board when he grumbles about life at Old Trafford.
Di Salvo provided the answers Real’s directors wanted to hear with president Ramon Calderon telling the board a few weeks ago: “We have done everything in our power to convince the lad to come. Now it’s up to Cristiano.”
As revealed in last week’s Sun, Calderon then admitted to a close pal: “We’ve tied things up with the kid. Everything’s done with Cristiano. The only thing that remains is for him to convince Manchester to sell.”
We also broke the story last week that the Spaniards expect Ronaldo to stage a strike if United do not sit down with Madrid to thrash out a deal.
Calderon has even confirmed SunSport’s exclusive on Saturday that Real want Ronaldo because he will be worth half a billion pounds in spin-off cash. He said Real are willing to pay anything for Ronaldo — like the world record £47million fee they paid Juventus for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.
The Spanish giants are convinced he would generate huge income for the club. Calderon also insists Real cannot force United to sell — but he again sent out a message for Ronaldo to force his way out of Old Trafford.
The Real president added: “All we have are what the papers say and rumours the player seems to want to leave. It’s an impossible operation because Manchester doesn’t want to sell him.Nobody can buy something when the owner doesn’t want to sell. So today it’s impossible. But if United decide to sell, then we would have to ask them about the player and find an agreement on the price. There are many factors.
“The price is not important. We had a player like Zidane who came here for £47m and it was an magnificent investment. It’s not a question of money but a question of efficiency."
Calderon added: “The case of Cristiano does not affect the image of the club abroad. I would be proud if big clubs made multi-million offers for Real Madrid players. In the end, if a player wants to leave — whatever the offer is — he will walk. The question is to give him guarantees of success.”
